Saving Lives: Group Blood Donation

MIND UP TEAM MEMBERS STEP UP TO DONATE

The Australian Red Cross reports that three blood donations are needed every minute to support Australians and save lives.

In April, Mind Up team members stepped up to visit the mobile Red Cross Lifeblood Collection Centre in Williamstown. Taking just an hour out of their day, they were able to donate blood and support the wider community.

Why is blood donation important?

Hospitals require a range of blood donations to support a wide array of health conditions, including treatments for cancer patients, childbirth, patients having surgery, as well as those with iron deficiency, anaemia or bleeding disorders.

There are 8 human blood types, so it’s important for the Red Cross to collect different types that will be compatible for all patients that come through hospitals. Did you know, that if your blood type is O-, you’re consider a universal donor? This is because this blood type is compatible with everyone, and can often be used in emergencies.

How can I get involved?

Blood donation is simply about making time to visit a Red Cross Lifeblood Centre near you. You can find out more information on their website here
