Are Your Emotions Overwhelming You?
A Look at Emotional Overwhelm and the Path to Stability
Do you ever feel like you’re constantly fighting a battle with your own emotions? Are you stuck in patterns that sabotage your goals, or does distress frequently spill over and impact your most important relationships? If so, you’re certainly not alone. The feeling of being overwhelmed by intense emotions is incredibly common, with studies showing that over three-quarters of people report experiencing significant emotional stress in a given year.
For some, ongoing emotional distress goes beyond typical stress and this pattern of emotional dysregulation can be profoundly disruptive and contribute to impulsive behaviours, or communication styles that damage important relationships. Over time, this cycle of emotional dysregulation can increase isolation, intensify distress, and create feelings of hopelessness and losing control.
This loss of control often looks like:
- Emotional Instability: Experiencing intense, rapid mood swings—moving quickly from calm to despair, anger, or anxiety, often disproportionate to the trigger.
- Impulsive Behaviors: Engaging in behaviours (like spending, reckless driving, substance use, or risky sex) in the heat of the moment to find immediate relief from emotional pain, often with negative long-term consequences.
- Intense and Unstable Relationships: Having relationships that feel like a rollercoaster, alternating between idealization (seeing someone as perfect) and devaluation (seeing them as flawed or uncaring), driven by a fear of abandonment.
- Difficulty with Anger: Struggling to manage intense anger, which may be expressed inappropriately through outbursts, sarcasm, or chronic bitterness.
- Chronic Feelings of Emptiness: A pervasive feeling of being hollow or having no sense of self, which can be deeply unsettling.
The good news is that change is possible. Learning to effectively manage these powerful emotions and behaviours is the first step toward regaining control and finding stability.
