Terrible events can and do happen to people. It could be a natural disaster, car / work accidents or acts of violence. Regardless of its origin the impact is unexpected; you’re unprepared; and there was nothing you could have done to prevent it from happening.
Traumatic events can lead to an immediate traumatic response. This may include a sense of shock, overwhelm and fear for your safety or that of loved ones. The body will take over and your mind can shut down as you automatically go into a Fight Flight Freeze response. This is similar to anxiety and fear. However, traumatic stress or Post Traumatic Stress Disorder means that the memory of what happened to you is very distressing, is played over repeatedly and changes the way you feel safe day to day.
We are all susceptible to experiencing traumatic responses. We are also capable of recovering from trauma. With the right understanding and tools to cope, a trained therapist will help you emotionally and mentally recover.
