The LGBTIQA+ community is incredibly diverse and represents many different paths of representing yourself and your relationship to others. This acronym has evolved over time and currently stands for lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, intersex, queer/questioning, asexual/aromantic. The plus sign is to show that there are infinite ways to identify and that this is a growing community.
Although our society has grown more accepting of the LGBTIQA+ community, advocacy and improving access to health and mental health services is still a high priority. Research has shown that LGBTIQA+ members are at a higher risk of depression, anxiety and suicide, compared to their non-LGBTIQA+ peers. Systemic discrimination is a large factor that contributes to this higher risk, with many members of the community facing bullying, homelessness and violence (verbal and physical) from their social networks, workplaces and even just walking down the street.
Here at Mind Up we support and stand up for the LGBTIQA+ community. You are welcome here. Our clinicians are warm and empathetic, the space we’ve created here is non-judgemental and we’re here to listen to you. Everyone’s journey is different and we’re here to meet you where you are.
Your reasons for seeking therapy may be separate from your experience as an LGBTIQA+ person, but the benefit of having your therapist come from an LGBTIQA+ informed place is significant and can have a powerful positive impact on your therapeutic journey.
